IWMD 2022 Merseyside Pier Head Event Update

Jamie McGovern CWU Area Safety Rep Reports

Every year on 28th April, all around the world the trade union movement unites to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day (#IWMD22).

We remember those who have lost their lives at work, or from work-related injury and diseases.

We renew our efforts to organise collectively to prevent more deaths, injuries and disease as a result of work.

Workers Memorial Day is commemorated throughout the world and is officially recognised by the UK Government.

It is a day on which we remember those we have lost. We organise in their memory.

For this year’s event we are aiming to finally unveil a new plaque in a permanent location on Georges dock building on the East side as detailed below on the planning photographs below.

This new plaque will reference all those who have been killed because of work or through failure of responsibility.

The new plaque will be mounted onto the wall to the side of the current Merseyside Tunnel workers memorial

This new plaque will include the poignant words said at the 2019 IWMD event by the late Tony Mulhearn who was an active supporter of International Workers Memorial Day.

The IWMD Organising Committee have sent Sincere & Heartfelt Thanks to the Merseyside Trade Union Branches who have made kind donations towards the cost of both the plaque and it's installation:

* CWU Greater Mersey Amal Branch * MAVSG * Merseyside Pensioners Committee * Unite 127404 Branch

* Wirral TUC * PCS union * NEU * Unite NW9/0541 branch * Unite 127404 Branch

Location -The Memorial Plaque will be installed on the East facing elevation of the control station.

The East Elevation is the prominent elevation facing ‘The Strand’ which is the main thoroughfare along the waterfront area in Liverpool.

The plaque can be viewed easily from the newly finished public walkway in front of the Georges Dock Building. The East Elevation has three symmetrical architectural niches. In the central niche there is the tunnel workers memorial.

The new plaque has been constructed in Indian Black Granite with polished edges and rounded corners. The lettering is 196 sandblasted letters all finished in gold leaf to match existing. The plaque will measure 940mm x 300mm and will be 30mm deep.

Shining A Light’ For IWMD 2022

AS previoussly reported by Unionsafety, this year the North West CWU & Merseyside IWMD committee are campaigning to light up iconic buildings & landmarks in purple for IWMD 2022

So far, Blackpool Tower, Mersey gateway Bridge, George’s dock building, and (not pictured) Bury Town Hall have agreed to Light up for this year's International Worker's Memorial Day

We are campaigning for more buildings and landmarks across the North West to join us in remembering the estimated 2.7 million workers who die globally each year as a result of Occupational accidents or work-related diseases.
